Keller Funner Breast Augmentation – Shorter Incision

If you’re looking for a new alternative to gel implant breast augmentation, Vincent Surgical Arts may have what you’re looking for.

Vincent Surgical Arts is now using the new, innovative, state-of-the-art delivery system called the Keller Funnel. Dr. Vincent is one of only two physicians in Utah performing breast augmentations using the Keller Funnel.

The Keller Funnel is a single use, cone-shaped device that assists in the delivery of pre-filled implants during breast augmentation procedures. It is made of nylon, and the interior is lined with a hydrophilic coating, which allows it to readily absorb moisture. Once the implant is inside of the funnel, Dr. Vincent then places the small, distal end into the prepared breast pocket. While using a pushing and squeezing motion, the breast implant is then propelled into place.

A few of the advantages to Keller Funnel breast augmentation include shorter incision lengths, faster healing time, a no-touch technique, more choices for incision placement and reduced force on the implant and the incision area. Both smooth and textured implants up to 800 cubic centimeters have been successfully implanted with the Kennel Funnel.

“Using the Keller Funnel when performing breast augmentation significantly shortens the surgery time. It also limits the stress that is put on the implant, which reduces the chance of it rupturing,” says Vincent. “It is a hands-free technique, which helps to prevent contamination and there is less trauma on the patient’s tissue. It really is a safe and convenient alternative for those who are considering having breast augmentation.”

Local Cosmetic Surgeon Offers Tips to Make New Year’s Procedures More Pleasant

The New Year is upon us, and one of the most popular resolutions is to have a cosmetic procedure done for a fresh start in the New Year. Studies show that more than 10 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2009, which is a 147 percent increase from the number of procedures that took place in 1997. Americans spent more than $11 billion on cosmetic surgery in 2009 alone. For many, the start of a New Year is the ideal time to make some changes for a healthier, more satisfying life. Improving one’s physical appearance through diet, exercise or cosmetic surgery is at the top of many resolution lists.

For those who are considering having cosmetic surgery, it is important to know that it can undoubtedly be uncomfortable at times. However, there are a few things that every patient can do prior to, during and after a procedure that will assist in making the process much more pleasant. Dr. Drake Vincent and his staff at Vincent Surgical Arts in Cottonwood Heights, Utah are dedicated to providing the highest quality care possible to all of their clients, and they strive to have well-informed and prepared patients. Here are four specific tasks Dr. Vincent recommends patients execute during the surgical process to help reduce risks and experience a shorter recovery time.

  • Prior to having any cosmetic procedure done, there will be a consultation with the surgeon. At this time, it is important for patients to have a thorough discussion with their physician about all of the medications and supplements they are currently taking, their family medical history, the location of the surgical facility and the recovery support that it offers. Addressing these issues at this point in the cosmetic surgery process will make for an informed physician and an equipped patient.
  • Days before the surgery, patients should: begin following all of the physician’s instructions regarding medications and supplements; locate an escort that can get them to the facility and back home safely; purchase supplies that they will need following the procedure including postoperative prescriptions; and quit smoking. Smoking can cause nausea, aggravate the lungs during surgery and even prolong recovery time.
  • The night before surgery, patients should pack an overnight bag with everything that they will need while they are at the surgical facility including legal documents, like a living will, and comfortable clothing. They should refrain from wearing any jewelry and remove valuables from their purse or wallet. Most importantly, this is the time to begin following the physician’s instructions regarding food and drink.
  • The day of the procedure, it is necessary to have someone stay with the patient for the entire length of time recommended by the physician. The patient will be given a list of discharge and medication instructions and emergency contact information.

“Diligently following all of the postoperative directions is extremely important after any medical procedure has taken place,” says Dr. Vincent. “It will really help to reduce any health threats associated with surgery, and it will make for the smoothest, most comfortable recovery possible.”

Dr. Vincent performs an array of cosmetic surgery procedures including liposuction, breast augmentation, hair restoration surgery, collagen injections, ear and eyelid surgery, laser hair removal and more. For anyone who is interested in having a cosmetic procedure done, following this checklist with the help of Vincent Surgical Arts will make for a pleasing surgical experience with incredible results.

Recovery Time

The holiday season is upon us and that means many people will be taking holiday vacation time. What many people don’t consider is that holiday vacation time is actually the perfect opportunity to recover from a cosmetic surgery procedure. Dr. Drake Vincent and his staff at Vincent Surgical Arts in Cottonwood Heights, Utah improve the lives of their patients on a daily basis by performing life-changing cosmetic surgery procedures. Vincent Surgical Arts wants to remind anyone who is interested in receiving cosmetic surgery to take advantage of using holiday vacation time to recover from a procedure, and avoid using any excess sick or vacation days.

Studies show that the demand for procedures such as breast enhancement and facial surgery is 50 percent higher in December than in an average month. A 30 percent increase in demand for non-surgical treatments such as lip enhancement and Botox was also reported. Many of those who are interested in receiving cosmetic surgery procedures opt to wait until after the New Year to focus on resolutions like improving their physical appearance, but the holidays present a fantastic opportunity to take care of those issues without missing any additional work.

“A lot of people feel that the holiday season is too busy to even think about having cosmetic surgery,” says Vincent, founder of Vincent Surgical Arts. “However, I can’t think of a better time to relax and recover while being surrounded by family and friends. The inability to miss work is one of the most common reasons that prospective patients postpone coming in for a treatment. Using holiday vacation time for recovery presents an ideal solution to that problem.”

Vincent is the only cosmetic surgeon in Utah and one of only three in the nation licensed to perform the SwiftLift, a new facelift procedure that reduces recovery time and results in less swelling, less bruising and an incision half the size of a standard facelift. Other cosmetic procedures he performs include body sculpting, hair restoration for men and women, breast lifts and breast augmentations. Vincent Surgical Arts has recently added a warm and relaxing medical spa to its facility to complement a full array of facial rejuvenation treatments, including the latest techniques in laser skin resurfacing, hair removal, microdermabrasion, wrinkle treatments as well as skin care programs and fillers.

Body Sculpting

Fall is officially here, the holidays are around the corner and you’ve worked hard this summer to lose weight and shape up. Unfortunately for some of us, there are some areas of the body that do not respond to diet and exercise. No matter how many crunches you do, that lower belly bulge may never go away. Dr. Drake Vincent from Vincent Surgical Arts wants to let people know how body sculpting may be the solution to reaching your goals.

“Weight gain, hormone imbalances, pregnancy and aging can cause unwanted fat deposits and bulges,” said Vincent. “Body sculpting is often the only option for some people to reach their ideal body shape. It works best for people who are close to their ideal weight, but just can’t get the bulges to go away.”

Body sculpting generally involves three procedures:

  • Liposuction
  • Abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck”
  • Breast Augmentation

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery technique that can enhance the appearance of men and women of all ages while boosting self esteem. This procedure is not for obese people. It is not meant to replace good eating and exercise habits, or to counter obesity; however, liposuction can offer help to remove unwanted fatty deposits in many areas of the body – most commonly in the thighs, hips, abdomen, buttocks, knees, ankles, calves and arms. They are also found in the facial areas such as the chin, cheeks, jowls and neck. The best candidates for liposuction are healthy men and women with good skin elasticity and realistic expectations for liposuction, meaning that improvement, not always perfection, is the goal. The fatty bulges should be localized to a few areas and the individual should be near their ideal body weight. Cellulite, or waffled skin, will not be cured by liposuction.

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that removes the excess wrinkled skin and fatty tissue from the abdomen and tightens abdominal muscles. The best candidate for this surgery has relatively normal weight, weak muscles and excess skin. The surgery is particularly helpful to women who, through multiple pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal.

Breast augmentation (or enlargement) is generally performed on women with underdeveloped breasts or on women who have experienced a decrease in breast size or shape due to pregnancy or weight loss. The surgery consists of lifting the breast tissue and placing an envelope containing a soft, natural-feeling implant material underneath.

Children and Otoplasty

Studies have found that 15 to 25 percent of students in the U.S. are bullied. Unfortunately, children with medical conditions that affect their appearance are also at higher risk of verbal bullying where kids make derogatory comments and call kids bad names. Dr. Drake Vincent from Vincent Surgical Arts in Cottonwood Height, UT wants to address the issue of protruding ears in children and raise awareness of the severe psychological trauma these kids may be facing as a result of verbal bullying.

It is well documented that children with protruding ears are easy targets from intentional teasing by classmates and unintentional attention from adults. The solution can be found in a common surgical procedure called Otoplasty, which is the only procedure to permanently pin back ears.

“Otoplasty is a unique procedure that requires specialized training, but it is very rewarding because it makes a difference in the life of a child,” said Dr. Vincent. “It has actually been shown in studies that teasing by peers can affect a child’s self esteem for the rest of their life. Many parents are unaware of the severe psychological trauma that may result from such harassment, but this procedure can help eliminate the issue of protruding ears in children ages five years and older.”

Otoplasty is performed by making incisions in the back of the ears to expose the ear cartilage. It may be necessary to remodel or remove some cartilage before the ear is repositioned. Sutures are then used to maintain this correction. The exterior skin is sutured and the ears bandaged for several days to protect them in their new position. Sutures are generally removed within a few days, unless absorbable sutures are used.

Dr. Vincent can perform this procedure in his office or the Vincent Surgical Arts out-patient surgical center. Although general anesthesia may be recommended for young children, many patients also do well with IV sedation and local anesthesia. The improvement from surgery is readily apparent, although the final result will not be evident for several weeks due to swelling and other natural changes that are a result of healing. Recovery is usually quick, and most pediatric patients are back to school in one to two days.

If you would like to learn more about Otoplasty and how it can help alleviate teasing and bullying for kids with protruding ears, Dr. Vincent would be delighted to speak with you.

Hair Restoration

It seems that even in a down economic period, more people would rather invest in their locks than their stocks. An online survey conducted in 2009 by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery found that 59.8 percent of people who were asked whether they would rather have more hair, more money or more friends chose more hair. Yet an estimated 80 million American men and women suffer from male or female pattern hair loss.

Dr. Drake Vincent of Vincent Surgical Arts in Cottonwood Heights, Utah wants to inform the public about hair restoration surgery that can be a permanent solution for the right candidate. Hair restoration surgery candidates are individuals with hair loss that have sufficient donor hair from the fringe of the scalp to transplant to the balding area. The most common form of medical restoration is hair transplant surgery.

“When done right, a hair transplant surgery can produce life-long results that are so natural that even hair stylists cannot detect them, but choosing the right hair restoration procedure and physician is vital as your results will last a life time,” says Vincent. “The first consultation with your hair restoration surgeon is critical to success, and a frank discussion of goals and treatment plans goes a long way to achieving satisfying results.”

Nearly 75 percent of all hair transplant patients are men. Male hormones cause most men to develop male pattern baldness until approximately 40 to 45 years of age. After that, the aging process thins the entire head of hair. Hair restoration surgery is the only permanent solution available for men suffering from hair loss. The procedure actually restores hair that will grow naturally and require styling and haircuts.

Hair transplantation is an operation which takes hair from the back of the head and moves it to the area of hair loss. The fringe (back and sides) of hair on a balding scalp is known as donor dominant hair which is the hair that will continue to grow throughout the life of most men. The transplantation of this hair to a bald area does not change its ability to grow. Donor dominance is the scientific basis for the success of hair transplantation.

Liposuction

There are some areas of the body that may never respond to diet and exercise. That’s why so many people are turning to cosmetic procedures. In fact, reports show that nearly 10 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States in 2009 with liposuction being the second highest ranking procedure. Dr. Drake Vincent of Vincent Surgical Arts in Cottonwood Heights, Utah wants to inform the public about this popular procedure and what you need to know when choosing a cosmetic surgeon.

Liposuction, also called liposculpture, lipoplasty or suction lipectomy, was introduced in the U.S. in the early 1980s. It is a cosmetic surgery technique developed by surgeons to remove stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to dieting and exercise. The surgeon makes small incisions near the area where fat is to be removed. A thin, hollow tube, called a cannula, is inserted and attached to a machine or syringe that creates a strong vacuum. The surgeon then strategically manipulates the cannula under the skin to remove the unwanted fatty deposits.

“This procedure is not for obese people, and it is not meant to replace good eating and exercise habits, or to counter obesity,” says Dr. Vincent. “Liposuction, however, can offer help to remove unwanted fatty deposits in many areas of the body – most commonly in the thighs, hips, abdomen, buttocks, knees, ankles, calves and arms. They are also found in the facial areas such as the chin, cheeks, jowls and neck. Once these localized fatty deposits are removed, the results are permanent as they can no longer balloon up out of proportion even if you gain weight after the procedure.”

According to Dr. Vincent, the best candidates for liposuction are healthy men and women with good skin elasticity. They must also have realistic expectations for liposuction. This means that improvement, not always perfection, is the goal. The fatty bulges should be localized to a few areas and the individual should be near his or her ideal body weight. Cellulite, or waffled skin, will not be cured by liposuction.

When selecting a cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Vincent advises you check out the physician’s education, training, certification and experience to make the best choice. Dr. Vincent is board certified in Facial Cosmetic Surgery by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS). Dr. Vincent has performed over 5,000 cosmetic procedures, is a fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the American College of Rejuvenology.

If you would like to learn more about the liposuction procedure or cosmetic surgeon qualifications, Dr. Vincent would be delighted to speak with you. He can also provide some before-and-after photos of his patients. If you’re interested in pursuing an interview with Dr. Vincent, please contact me at (801)541-9244, or at [email protected]

How to Choose a Cosmetic Surgeon

It is imperative when choosing a cosmetic surgeon to consider the following issues. Cosmetic surgery is a major decision and careful thought should be given to choosing a physician. Any reputable cosmetic surgeon will welcome your questions and want you to be completely comfortable with his or her qualifications.

  • What are the surgeon’s credentials? Don’t hesitate to verify a physician’s medical license, certifications and professional society memberships and ask what the requirements are to be a member or to be board certified in that specialty.
  • What is the surgeon’s experience? Ask about the surgeon’s medical education and training, specifically to cosmetic surgery and the procedure which you are considering. How many procedures of this kind has the doctor done and how often does he or she perform them?
  • Ask for referrals from friends and the physician’s other patients. Keep in mind that physicians specialize in different areas of cosmetic surgery and most are not experts in every area. The surgeon who did a fantastic breast augmentation may not be the most experienced to perform a face lift or other facial surgery.
  • Before-and-After photographs can give you some indication of a surgeon’s ability, although you must realize that photos cannot guarantee the result you will achieve. Each patient is different and the surgeon can help determine what realistic expectations you should realize.
  • Look at your options. Don’t be afraid to consult with more than one cosmetic surgeon to discuss your desired outcome. There may be more than one technique available with varying risks, benefits, recovery time, and results.
  • Make sure you are comfortable with the personal rapport between you and your surgeon. In addition, you should feel at ease with the staff, as much of your communication will be with them. You should always feel that your concerns are being addressed.

What is the difference between Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is a subspecialty that uniquely focuses on enhancing appearance through surgical and medical techniques. Cosmetic surgery is primarily learned during a surgeon’s post residency through ongoing continuing education, training, and experience. Cosmetic surgery can be performed on all areas of the head, neck and body. Because treated areas function properly but lack aesthetic appeal, cosmetic surgery is elective.

Plastic surgery is defined as a surgical specialty dedicated to reconstruction of facial and body defects due to birth disorders, trauma, burns, and disease. Plastic surgery is intended to correct dysfunctional areas of the body and is reconstructive in nature.

While board certification in plastic surgery may evidence a physician competent in “plastic surgery”, it does not evidence competency in “cosmetic surgery” nor does it demonstrate more “cosmetic surgery” education, training, or experience that that of other board certified physicians.

Swiftlift Utah 2010

A new facelift procedure reduces recovery time and results in less swelling, less bruising and an incision half the size of a standard facelift. Dr. Drake Vincent is the only cosmetic surgeon in Utah and one of only three in the nation licensed to perform the SwiftLift. “With the SwiftLift I’m able to perform this surgery in 1 1/2 to two hours. By comparison, a standard facelift traditionally takes three to five hours,” says Dr. Vincent.

According to Dr. Vincent, “With the SwiftLift the results aren’t a tight, pulled-back look you get with other procedures. When I perform the SwiftLift procedures I actually tighten the deeper structures of the lower face, which ensures a long-lasting result. And, it’s all done with a simple incision by the ear.”

Dr. Vincent has performed over 1,200 SwiftLift procedures, and about 10 percent of these involve out-of-state patients. According to Dr. Vincent, the SwiftLift makes it possible for patients to return to work soon after the procedure. Plus, he says, the results will last a long time. “After the procedure your skin will continue to age but you will never have the sagging you had before the surgery. You can expect this procedure to last five to 10 years,” says Dr. Vincent.

Dr. Vincent is a native Utahn. He graduated from Oregon Health Sciences University and then the University of Alabama, obtaining both medical and dental degrees. Dr. Vincent has had intensive training in all aspects of cosmetic surgery including full facial and body cosmetic procedures. He is in private practice at Vincent Surgical Arts in Cottonwood Heights, Utah. The facility is an ambulatory surgery center designed by Dr. Vincent with patient safety and comfort in mind. As this is the only facility in Utah and one of only three in the nation licensed to perform the SwiftLift, Vincent Surgical Arts has an overnight guest suite in their office for out-of-state patients.
