Laser Hair Removal: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

While laser hair removal has become commonplace, many people don't know that it hasn't always worked for people with darker or tanned skin types. For the longest time, laser hair removal was only available to people with lighter skin. Luckily, new laser designs work on most skin and hair types. Whatever your type, Dr. Vincent can help you get rid of that unwanted hair.

Laser hair removal works by sending low-energy beams through the skin, and was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997. The first lasers approved for hair reduction by the FDA were the ruby, alexandrite and diode lasers. However, these could only be used on certain skin types, and wouldn't work on people with tanned or darker skin. Newer laser designs have the ability to treat darker skin types, Asian skin and those with a tan.

The laser hair removal process typically requires six to eight treatments, with four to eight weeks between appointments. Results can generally be seen after the first treatment. Sometimes, you may be required to touch-up some areas that have grown back after treatment has ended.

Some normal side-effects may occur after laser hair removal treatments, including itching, redness and swelling around the treatment area. These side effects should not last more than three days, and most people can return to work and normal activities immediately after treatment.

Bottom-line: Laser hair removal is the best and most effective way to have a permanent reduction of unwanted body hair.
